Options run from chain-link with slat inserts, the cheapest fix, to brick or stone walls, the biggest build.
Pick by how much you need blocked where you sit. Many areas cap fence height, though a freestanding lattice screen inside your property line may be allowed where a taller fence is refused.
1. Wood-Board Fences
Board layout sets both the look of a fence and how much it screens.
Vertical boards read as tall and formal, while horizontal slats look sleek, modern and more relaxed. Herringbone, a zig-zag pattern usually built in redwood or vinyl, makes the fence itself the feature.
For the most privacy, I’d pick board-on-board: vertical pine or cedar boards that overlap at the edges. The Good Neighbor version adds two layers of overlapping pickets, which blocks views and reduces noise.
Brooklyn designer Christina Nielsen used horizontal slats that double as a trellis for climbing greenery.
Add a kickboard along the base to keep boards away from moisture and soil, and size the build to standard fence-board dimensions to avoid waste and extra cuts.

2. Lattice and Trellis Screens
Lattice adds pattern and gives climbing plants something to grip, but the weave decides how much privacy you get. Vinyl lattice has small square or diamond-shaped openings and needs much less upkeep than wood.
A wide square lattice panel is see-through, so it marks a boundary, such as the line between a driveway and a back garden, without hiding anything.
For real screening, use high-density lattice framed between wood posts, which blocks the view into the yard completely.
My pick for most small yards is solid boards below with lattice on top.
You keep privacy at eye level, and the lattice lets more light through. Open trellis fences suit large, sprawling gardens better than tight ones.

3. Bamboo Screens
Bamboo and rattan give a yard a bohemian island look that standard wood panels don’t, the style seen at the Papaya Playa Project hotel in Tulum.
Tropical climates suit it best, but it also holds up in colder regions and can withstand snow, so a cold winter doesn’t rule it out.
The drawback is cost. Bamboo or rattan fencing may cost more than classic wood, so get quotes for both before you commit.
On a tight yearly garden budget, I’d spend it where the look matters most, such as the edge of a patio, and use plain wood for the long runs.

4. Metal Panel Fencing
Metal gives you everything from full screening to an open view, so the material decides the privacy:
- Aluminum panels are lightweight, rust-resistant and low maintenance. Matte powder-coated black or bronze looks modern. Space the slats tightly for full privacy, or leave them slightly open for a semi-private screen. For most small yards, I’d pick aluminum.
- Corten steel develops a rust-like patina over time. Choose it only if you want that weathered look.
- Corrugated panels give complete privacy and resist rust when properly coated. The budget-conscious route is galvanized panels in a treated-lumber frame.
- Wrought iron is the ornamental choice. It keeps a view open, so it gives the least privacy of the group.

5. Living Screens
Shrubs, hedges, trees and vines block sightlines and cut wind and noise.
They take years to fill in, so a fence gives privacy faster, though a mature planting may make the fence unnecessary. Edmund Hollander’s planting of some 250 English grandifloras shows the scale involved.
In a small yard, tall posts at the back corner can turn a raised bed into a built-in privacy wall.
Around flowerbeds or vegetables, choose fencing that disappears into the garden:
Since gardens are meant to be lush and beautiful, opt for fencing that blends in well with the environment.
Lisa Bynon’s 8-foot wooden fence strikes that balance between open and closed.

Black Ridged Slats for 4ft chain link are deliberately cut to about 44.5in long. These fence inserts are designed primarily for 4ft 11 or 9 gauge chain link with a two inch diamond. Also works in economy chain link with a larger diamond pattern, but privacy will be less. Slats must be installed correctly and be fully inserted inside the wire mesh of your fence to achieve the desired results. Cannot be used to extend the fence height. Not suitable for fences on a steep slope.
Black Fence Slat - Designed for a 6' high fence, slats are approximately 68.5" in length to accommodate the bottom locking channel and to prevent the slats from being above the top of the fence. (Available Colors: Beige, Black, Brown, Gray, Green, Redwood, Royal Blue, Sky Blue, White)
6. Wood and Hog-Wire Mixes
Hog-wire panels paired with horizontal cedar slats or treated wood work as two fences in one.
Put the slats where eyes land, such as the stretch facing a neighbor’s kitchen window, and leave open wire elsewhere so air moves and you can still see over the top.
I’d pick this over a fully solid fence on a corner lot or around a patio, where a wall can feel boxed in. Use solid boards only where you need the privacy.
The spliced picket fence takes the same idea in an architectural direction. Hollander Design and Roger Ferris & Partners built a modern version of the classic picket, and how private it feels depends on how open or closed you make it.
Close the gaps for screening, and open them where you want a view.

7. Pallet and Split-Rail Fences
A short pallet fence suits a yard where you want a little privacy, a barrier against animal intruders, or a secure spot for pets to roam.
Pallets are inexpensive and go up quickly with limited construction knowledge, so they make an easy first DIY fence. Kept low, the rustic look stays intact and forest views stay open.
Split-rail is more open still.
It resembles a four-rail horse fence, and it gives almost no privacy on its own. Cover the gaps with mesh for extra protection or to keep pets in along the perimeter.
I’d pick either to mark a boundary, not to hide a patio.

8. Chain-Link With Slats
If you already have a chain-link fence, privacy slats or mesh inserts are the cheapest way to screen the yard without tearing anything out.
Both fit into the open weave, so your posts, rails and fabric stay where they are. Mesh also cuts wind flow, which helps on an exposed lot.
I’d choose this over a new fence whenever the chain link is straight and sound. Inserts give you a budget-friendly screen without paying for a full privacy fence, and the work is mostly threading material through the links.
The cost is looks.
Slats and mesh leave a fence that still reads as chain link, just filled in. If you want it to look like a garden feature, plan to soften it with plants along the base.

9. Composite Fencing
Composite suits anyone who wants the look of a wood fence without the yearly staining. Panels blend wood fibers with plastic, and makers describe them as recycled-content boards that resist fading, cracking and warping.
They also claim the fence can last for decades without staining or sealing. That is a sales claim, not a shared standard, so I would read the written warranty on any brand before paying.
Finishes range from wood grain to colors chosen to match your siding, and a strip of lattice along the top gives a more ornate look.

10. Vinyl and White Picket
Vinyl comes in lattice, solid and picket forms, and all three resist rot, pests and weather damage.
It doesn’t fade and never needs painting or staining, which is why I’d pick it over wood for anyone short on weekends. Solid panels give the most screening, with semi-opaque panels a step below.
The classic white picket or post-and-rail look suits a property line or an accent on your own lot. For a rustic feel, build it from reclaimed wood.
For small-town charm, paint it white. Either way, a picket or post-and-rail fence gives little privacy by itself, so choose solid vinyl if screening is the goal.

FENCE PRIVACY: Unlike fence tape, these slats are designed to easily slide vertically through your chain-link fence for optimal outdoor privacy. Determine the diamond size of your fence by measuring diagonally between the parallel wires, not corner to corner. The added privacy of the wings leaves no unsightly perforations or wave pattern. Compatible with 4', 6', and 8' height fences.
11. Brick, Stone and Tile Walls
Brick gives a patio an old-school look, and a coat of white paint lets it sit comfortably beside modern pieces like brushed cement flooring and an oversized planter. Natural stone reads as country chic and adds security along with privacy.
Check zoning regulations before planning a stone wall, since rules differ by region. A wall finished in decorative tile is the dressier route, turning a plain surface into a feature.
These give the most solid screening on the list, with no gaps to see through. They are also a bigger build than any fence here, so I’d reserve them for a spot you’re sure about.
12. A Fence Extension
A low stucco garden wall can gain privacy without losing light if you build a slatted extension on top.
Spaced slats break up sightlines from the neighbors’ side while sunlight still passes between them. In a small yard, the open pattern also looks lighter than a solid panel and gives the space a tropical feel.
For a shady or tiny yard, I’d pick slats over solid boards, since a solid extension can turn a sunny corner dim. Narrower gaps give more privacy, and wider gaps let in more light.
Check height limits before you buy lumber.
An extension usually counts toward total fence height, and many areas cap it. The Check Local Rules First section covers how to confirm yours.
13. Patio Screens and Arbors
A freestanding or portable partition is the easiest fix for a balcony or the edge of a patio.
It needs no digging and goes with you if you move. Set it on the side where neighbors can see in.
A slatted arbor over the seating area works differently.
You can see out through the slats, but from a distance it’s harder for anyone to see in. For a patio close to the house, I’d pick this over a solid panel, which can feel boxed in.
A covered patio with privacy lattice also makes a private seating area, but it’s the pricier choice. I’d pay for it only if you’ll sit out most evenings.
Check how any open-weave screen performs after dark. It hides you in daylight, but lit from inside, it lets people see in.
Match the Screen to Your Neighbors
Start with the one spot you most want private, usually where you sit, and decide what has to be blocked there: a second-story window, a neighbor’s patio, or noise.
The higher the neighbor’s view, the closer the screen should sit to your seating area, since a screen out at the back fence can’t stop a sight line that angles down from above.
Then match density to distance. For close neighbors, I’d choose boards butted together with no gaps, which also blocks the most sound because denser screens cut more noise.
Farther neighbors can usually get by with a trellis-style screen, and it looks nicer beside a patio. Gaps matter after dark too: with lights on, a trellis lets people see in.
Check Local Rules First
Call your city or county planning office before you buy a single post. Ask these questions:
- Which bylaws and ordinances cover fences and garden structures at your address?
- Is a building permit required?
- Do you have to submit plans for approval before you start building?
- What is the maximum fence height? Many areas cap it.
Height caps often apply only to the fence itself.
Taller structures set within the yard, such as a lattice screen built inside your property line, are sometimes legal, so a freestanding screen may succeed where a taller fence would be refused.
I’d get the answer in writing before spending anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are some easy privacy fence ideas?
A short pallet fence is the easiest first DIY project because it goes up quickly with limited construction knowledge, though it gives only a little privacy.
If you already have a chain-link fence, threading privacy slats or mesh through the links is the simplest upgrade. On a balcony or patio edge, a freestanding or portable partition needs no digging and moves with you.
How much would a 200 ft privacy fence cost?
Pallet fences are inexpensive, and slat or mesh inserts in an existing chain-link fence are the cheapest way to screen a yard. Bamboo or rattan may cost more than classic wood, so compare quotes for both.
When putting up a privacy fence, which side faces out?
Ordinances vary by address, so ask your city or county planning office whether your area has a rule on this.
While you are on the phone, ask about permits, plan approval and maximum fence height. Get the answers in writing before you buy materials.
